Bears work out ex-Lions safety, 7 others

The Chicago Bears put eight players through workouts on Tuesday at Halas Hall, according to an NFL source, including veteran safety Amari Spievey . The Lions released Spievey last month after he appeared in 35 games for them. Drafted in the third round in 2010 as a cornerback, he was converted to safety and started 15 games in 2011 when the Lions reached the playoffs. Spievey played in only five games last season and was placed on season-ending injured reserve following the game against the Bears in Week 7 after suffering his second concussion of the season. He made 117 tackles in three seasons for the Lions and five interceptions.

Nelson Cruz begins workouts in Arizona

Cruz, suspended for the final 50 games of the regular season after being linked to the Miami-based Biogenesis Clinic, went through full defensive drills and batting practice with the players who are on injury rehabilitation. The Rangers said he will continue workouts tomorrow. The Rangers have not made a commitment to Cruz on whether he'll return if they do see the postseason. Texas has lost nine of its past 12 games and has struggled offensively, scoring its most runs in a 7-5 loss Wednesday to the Pittsburgh Pirates since it also scored five runs Aug.
